Improving the appropriate use of antibiotics in Serbian health-care settings: EVIPNet evidence brief for policy, number 11

Other Titles
Abstract
Inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance and increases the costs of care, as well as morbidity and mortality of patients. Serbia ranks the third highest among European countries in the rates of antibiotic consumption and antimicrobial resistance. This brief focuses on ensuring appropriate and optimal antimicrobial use to improve patient outcomes, prevent adverse drug reactions and the development of antimicrobial resistance, improve surveillance of the consumption of antibiotics, and prescribers’ communication skills. A working group identified, selected, appraised, and synthesized relevant research evidence on the problem, put forward three options for tackling it, and considerations in implementing them. The three policy options are introducing national stewardship for addressing antibacterial resistance, improving systems for monitoring antibiotic consumption and strengthening prescribers’ communication skills in primary care. Supported by strong scientific evidence, the three options described offer the most appropriate and feasible solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance in Serbia within the framework of public health policies.
